The PTE Repeat Sentence part comes after the Read Aloud. In this task, you’ll listen to a short sentence and need to repeat it exactly.
The section tests not only your language skills but also combination skills, such as memory and recall. Besides producing a clear verbal and exact speech as the given sentences, you need to quickly and correctly remember the content to generate a well-scored answer.
In this section, the PTE Repeat Sentence audios last about 3-9 seconds, 10-12 in total. Each sentence is played once. When it finishes, the microphone will open, and candidates will have 15 seconds to respond.
At this point, the status box changes from “Recording” to “Completed.” You need to speak immediately and finish your answer before the progress bar ends.
You have only one chance to record the response, so ensure you do it as perfectly as possible.
The Repeat Sentence part tests your 2 English skills: listening and speaking.
As for listening, candidates must listen to the speakers who will speak in different tones, speeds, and accents. You need to stay focused to memorize and copy it correctly.
Vocabulary can be diverse, from daily conversations to academic lectures. To improve understanding and listening skills, test takers should try to broaden their vocabulary.

PTE Repeat Sentence marking criteria are based on 3 elements: content, oral fluency, and pronunciation.
Content
Your response should include all the words and exact information as given in the audio. If candidates can make 100% accuracy, they will get 3 points.
With 50% accuracy, they will have 2 points. And 1 point will be given to those who have an accuracy of less than 50%.
If your answer does not match the original content at all, you’ll not receive any points.
Oral fluency
You will be given a score for this criteria based on how smooth your speech is. If you can speak at a natural speed and with appropriate pauses, you’ll have a higher score. The maximum one is 5; the minimum is 0.
Besides, you can increase your oral fluency score by using good phrases properly.
Pronunciation
Your pronunciation will be scored from 0 to 5, depending on your performance. Appropriate word sounds and clear speech will give you a better result.
Many students find the PTE speaking Repeat Sentence part challenging for many reasons.
One of them is because of the diverse accents in the audio. Candidates may not be familiar with some accents; thus, they can’t follow and produce a correct answer.
Another reason is that the students are focused too much on each word’s accuracy, leading to losing the speaking flow. Unnatural speech will also affect your score.

Take notes
As mentioned above, the task requires memorization. Focus on the sentence and picture the words in your mind. If you can’t do so, try taking notes.
However, you also should take notes smartly. There’s no need to write down everything as it will consume lots of time. Noting down only keywords and phrases is enough.
Focus on the meaning
Sentences carry meanings. It’s an advantage if you can understand the speech so that you can remember it more easily. It also helps you emphasize the correct words and produce natural intonation.
When the microphone is on, apply these tips to have a high-scored answer:
Speak naturally
In this task, you should copy the words, not the accent. So, just make yourself sound as natural as possible. Copying the accent will not make any sense, and you’ll not get a point for it.
Speak loud enough and at a normal speed
The microphones can’t catch you if you murmur. Ensure you speak loud enough so that your answer will be fully recorded.
Though you have only 15 seconds to finish your answer, it’s enough. There’s no need to rush; thus, try to speak at a normal speed. Rushing can cause miss pronunciation or other mistakes that can affect your result.
Don’t correct yourself
If you make a mistake, don’t correct it. Keep going on until you finish your answer. There’s no time for repeating yourself.
Make a guess
Once you face a word you don’t know, make an attempt, and then keep moving on. It will give you enough time to complete your answer, and you will probably get a score.
It’s also not a good idea to leave an unanswered response. Making a guess may give you a point.
The PTE Repeat Sentence can be challenging as you need to hear, memorize, and repeat in a short time. There can be new words that you don’t know or an accent that you’re not familiar with.
