Initially, you will see a text prompt of up to 60 words on the screen. For each question, there are 30 to 40 seconds for reading the prompt and preparation. Your job is to read the provided text aloud within the allowed time, which varies depending on the prompt’s length.
After the preparation time, the microphone will open, and the status box will start recording, signaled by a short tone. Before that, don’t say anything because it won’t be recorded.
Now, start reading the text clearly. The system stops recording when the status box switches from “Recording” to “Completed.” Candidates can only record their answers once for each question.
Your response will be assessed based on these criteria:
The PTE Read Aloud question covers various text types, from academic writings to news articles. Below are some main types to help you prepare:
Make use of the first 30 or 40 seconds to scan through the prompt. This enables you to grasp the context and the key message of the provided text. In addition, you can identify keywords and take note of problematic phrases. If the time allows, try practicing difficult words to warm up your brain.
One of the biggest mistakes is that you read the entire text without proper pauses. Pay attention to semi-colons, commas, full stops, and linking words like but, and, etc., to break down the message.
If you come across an overly long sentence, mentally chunk it into smaller sections for better delivery.
By highlighting keywords in the text, you can deliver the message more clearly. Try to put stress on important words or phrases to emphasize the topic. This increases not only your content score but also your oral fluency mark.
Pause for more than 3 seconds, and the system will stop recording your response. This is the last thing you want to happen. So, when making pauses between ideas or sentences, it’s recommended to keep it at 1 second or less. Repeating words or phrases also hurts your overall score.
Keeping a monotonous tone during your speech will negatively affect your performance. Raise your voice at the end of questions or when you want to express strong emotions. Meanwhile, lower your voice when emphasizing keywords or pausing.
Various tones of voice allow the AI system to recognize and grasp the message of your answer easily.
A common misconception is that the faster you speak, the better your score. While fluency is an important scoring criterion, speaking too quickly poses some risks.
You might mispronounce or skip some words, which lowers your score. Also, the computer might not understand your response fully. Therefore, it’s best to maintain a calm pace of speech.
Don’t panic if you make an error when recording. Just ignore it and continue with your answer. If you’re worried and try to correct it, it can impact your result even worse. Additionally, don’t use filler words, like “um” or “ah” while speaking.
Like other tasks, practice is the key to higher scores in the PTE Read Aloud. Try various topics to familiarize yourself with wider vocabulary and complex structures of sentences.
It’s advised to record yourself while practicing so you can evaluate your performance. Identify areas for improvement and spend more time on them.
The PTE Read Aloud is not a challenging task in the exam.
However, candidates are likely to fall into common pitfalls. Even a small mistake can ruin their score, so pay close attention to punctuation, pace, and tone of voice while recording.
Good luck!
