Read and Complete is the official name of this task. Duolingo uses the name “Fill in the Blanks” for a different task: one sentence with one unfinished word, 20 seconds per question and 6 to 9 questions per test. Read and Complete is a unique question type that measures your “reduced redundancy” processing. This section appears 3 to 6 times on the Duolingo English Test and is designed to measure your reading ability. In other words, this activity tests how well you are able to understand a given piece of text even if certain parts are missing.
The Mechanics of the Task
For this activity, you are given a short paragraph. Certain words in this piece of text are mutilated, meaning that only the first half of each word is visible, while the second part is missing. Your task is to complete these words by filling in the missing letters. The title, the first sentence and the last sentence contain no unfinished words, and two unfinished words never sit next to each other. Each Read and Complete passage has a 3-minute time limit. Each unfinished word is scored on its own, and you must provide the complete spelling of the word to receive credit—no partial credit is awarded for a partly correct word. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so if you are unsure, it is encouraged to guess.
Why Is It So Difficult?
One reason why this activity is quite tricky is that, unlike the Reading Fill in the Blanks tasks in PTE Academic, where you choose words from a drop-down list or drag them into place, Duolingo does not offer you this facility. Instead, you are required to recall the correct word from memory. Understanding the context of the sentence and the grammatical requirements is crucial to accurately identify and complete the correct word.
Scoring and Importance
This task counts toward your Reading subscore, and through it toward Literacy and Comprehension. Because the DET is adaptive, the difficulty of some questions changes based on how you answer, so the passages can get harder as you do well. Harder words usually tell the test more about your reading ability than easier ones.

Before you begin, remember to read the entire paragraph carefully to understand the full context and identify key phrases or keywords—this is crucial for working out the right word to complete each gap. Each underscore stands for one missing letter, and the first and last sentences of each paragraph are complete, as in the real test. Give yourself 3 minutes per paragraph. The three levels are our own grouping: Duolingo does not label its passages this way, and in the real test the difficulty adapts to your answers.

To do well on the Duolingo Read and Complete task, one needs to comprehend the rationale behind the completions:
Beginner Level (A-D): The questions in this section are based on High-Frequency Daily Vocabulary. Note the connection between the words “musician” and “guitar” in paragraph C. Note the “s” in the word “neighbors” and the word “plays,” which is in the third person singular form. The words in paragraph D, like “usually,” “breakfast,” and “minutes,” are common spelling mistakes among beginners.
Intermediate Level (E-H): These paragraphs have Academic Collocations. In Paragraph G, the word combination “Architecture” and “designing” is a common link. Observe the usage of the word “ensure,” which has the word “last” as a functional verb. In Paragraph H, words like “Renewable,” “increasingly,” and “technologies” are useful academic words to know.
Advanced Level (I-K): These include Nominalization and Abstract Concepts. In paragraph J, words such as “exacerbation,” “inequality,” and “imperative” are advanced academic vocabulary. In paragraph K, words such as “symbolism,” “nuances,” and “sophisticated” will assess your knowledge of completing multi-syllable academic words used to define abstract analysis.
To do well on Duolingo Read and Complete, you need a mix of logic and linguistic intuition. Identifying the part of speech of the incomplete word and using logical inference based on the sentence context are crucial strategies for finding the correct answer. Here are four steps to help you do so.
This is the ‘Golden Rule’ for the Duolingo English Test. Duolingo will always give you half of the word, or slightly fewer characters if the word contains an odd number of characters.
Suppose you’re given ‘trad_____’, and you think the word is ‘tradition’. ‘Tradition’ contains 9 characters. You’re given 4 characters, and you’re providing 5 characters. You should notice that 4 is indeed fewer than 5.
Do not start typing immediately. Read the entire paragraph first to get a sense of “Big Picture.”
Example:
If a sentence begins with “The result of the st___…”, and the following sentence begins “Researchers found that…”, then we can be fairly sure that the word is “study.”
What to do:
Use the first 20 seconds of your 3-minute time to just read.
Use the words around the blank space to determine the Part of Speech.
The DET is a test of your proficiency, not your knowledge of obscure 18th-century poetry. Choose the simple word over the complex word, and the simple word is likely the word you need. The simple word is the common word you might use in academic settings.
In order to go from a 100 to a 130+, you must train your brain to recognize patterns, not individual words. Regular reading and exposure to new words in context can significantly improve your vocabulary, which is crucial for success in the Read and Complete section of the Duolingo English Test. This targeted approach can significantly improve your overall test performance.
Here are some strategies to help you master the Read and Complete questions:
About a third of the answers in Level 2 and Level 3 come from the Academic Word List. Instead of memorizing words, focus on learning collocations.
Bad: Learning the word “impact.”
Good: Learning the phrase “have a significant impact on.”
English is a predictable language.
“Not only… but also…”
“On the one hand… on the other hand…”
“Despite the fact that…”
If you recognize these ‘skeletons,’ you can fill in the answers with words such as “Des____” (Despite) or “How____” (However) instantly.
3 minutes is a long time until you get stuck on a 12-letter word. Set a timer during your Duolingo Read and Complete practice. If you’re not able to fill in the word, move on. You can come back to it at the end.
Don’t just look at the right answer. Ask yourself: “Why did I miss this?”

The “Reading: Fill in the Blanks” tasks in PTE Academic also train you to use context and grammar, but PTE gives you words to choose from, while Read and Complete makes you type the missing letters yourself. Practicing PTE materials can still build the contextual awareness needed for the DET.
