You must figure out which words fit best in those blank spaces.
Next to each blank, there’s a little drop-down menu; when you click on it, you’ll see a list of word options.
Simply choose the one that makes the most sense in that particular spot, both grammatically and in terms of meaning.
If you select an option and then change your mind, it’s no problem; just click again and choose a different word.
As for scoring, you get one point for every correct word you select.

Before you look more closely at the blanks, take 15 to 20 seconds to skim the entire passage from beginning to end.

Once you’ve got the big picture, it’s time to slow down and take a closer look.
Now, go back to the beginning of the text and read more carefully, paying special attention to the sentences containing blanks.
Each sentence gives you valuable grammatical and contextual clues about what kind of word is missing!
The words that come just before and after the blank also strongly hint at what type of word is needed and what it should mean.
Furthermore, you should notice if certain words go together.
English has common word pairings (called collocations) like “take responsibility” or “make progress.”
Recognizing those natural combinations can help you spot the correct answer faster, even if the other options seem grammatically acceptable.
Now, it’s time to start choosing answers!
Click the drop-down menu for the first blank and look at all the options.
Read each one carefully and consider how it would sound in the sentence.
Don’t rely only on what “sounds right;” make sure it makes sense in all aspects.
Sometimes, more than one choice might seem correct at first, but only one will be the best fit based on meaning, usage, and sentence structure.
Most importantly, you should trust the clues you’ve picked up from Steps 1 and 2.
The more you practice this step, the more intuitive it will become.
If you’re unsure, always make your best guess — remember, this task has no negative marking.
After you’ve made your selections for every blank, don’t rush to submit the answer.
Instead, read through the entire passage again, this time with your chosen words in place.
You want to make sure everything flows smoothly from start to finish!
The completed passage should feel natural and logical, with no awkward or confusing sentences.
Building vocabulary doesn’t just mean memorizing difficult words.
You have to learn which words belong in which situations.
To do so, start reading more — anything from news articles to blog posts to academic passages.
Pay attention to how words are used in context, not just their definitions.
Then, write down new words and make sentences with them.
You can also review them regularly using flashcards or apps like Quizlet.
If you don’t fully understand what a sentence is trying to say, it’s really hard to choose the word that completes it best!
Consider reading widely, especially materials that are similar to PTE content, like opinion pieces, science articles, educational texts, etc.
As you read, challenge yourself to identify the main point, how the ideas are connected, and why the author used this example or word.
Also, when you’re practicing the actual task, do not focus excessively on the few words around a blank.
Read the whole sentence — sometimes even the one before or after; you need to see how the blank fits into the bigger picture.
Once the meaning clicks, the correct word often becomes obvious.
You don’t need to rush, but you do need to be efficient.
Try to keep each passage under two minutes, and if one blank is giving you a hard time, skip it for now and come back to it later.
After all, answering the other blanks gives you more context that makes the tricky one easier!

It trains you to make quick, confident decisions and to move on when necessary.
Regular practice is important, but you do not have to cram for hours.
