Duolingo English Test (DET) Report Explained

Test Overall Score

The overall score of the Duolingo English Test (DET) ranges between 10 and 160.

It represents how good you are at using the English language.

The score helps one get an overview of your English proficiency.

It means how well you’ll be able to use English in various aspects, like social, academic, or professional fields.

A good score varies based on the requirements of the educational institutions or programs you’re applying to.

Duolingo aligns its score scale with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). According to Duolingo’s CEFR alignment study (October 2024), these score ranges match these CEFR levels:

  • B1: 60-95
  • B2: 100-125
  • C1: 130-150
  • C2: 155-160

Scores below 60 are below B1. For a description of what each level means, see our Duolingo English Test result sample explained.

Test Subscores

In addition to the overall score, the Duolingo English Test (DET) report provides 4 individual subscores (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) and the 4 integrated subscores below.

They measure your proficiency in specific language skills.

Each subscore is also rated from 10 to 160:

  • Literacy: Assesses your ability to read and write in English.
  • Comprehension: Measures your listening and reading skills.
  • Conversation: Tests your ability to speak and understand spoken English.
  • Production: Evaluate your speaking and writing skills.

When Should You Retake The Duolingo English Test (DET)?

Expired Duolingo English Test (DET) Results

If your Duolingo English Test (DET) results have expired after 2 years, you will no longer be able to send your score to universities.

You will also no longer be able to view your certificate.

Let’s say you need to use your score for applications or other purposes.

In this case, you will need to retake the test.

Uncertified Test

In some cases, you may receive a notification that your test is uncertified.

The reasons might stem from rule violations, technical issues, or ID problems.

You may need to retake the test.

Each test credit gives you three attempts to complete and upload the test, and one certified result per credit. If a technical error stops your test from being uploaded or certified, you can retake it at no additional cost while you still have attempts left on the credit.

If your result is invalid because of a Rule Violation (evidence that your test environment may not have been secure), you can also retake the test at no additional cost while you still have attempts left. If two tests on the same credit have Rule Violations, the credit expires and you need a new one.

If Duolingo finds Possible Misconduct (strong evidence that you may have received help), your credit expires immediately, even if you have attempts left. You can buy a new test, and you can also appeal the result. For details, see Duolingo’s Help Center articles on test credits and attempts and on the consequences of breaking the rules.

Get Higher Score

Do you want to improve your score for university admissions?

Was your score not sufficient for your desired institution?

Retaking the test is the way to go.

It might be because you didn’t prepare fully or were anxious the first time.

Consider retaking it if you believe you can perform better.

Make sure to review areas where you struggled to achieve a higher score.

How To Send Duolingo English Test (DET) Results To Universities?

Test-takers can follow the steps below to send Duolingo English Test (DET) results to universities or any other educational organizations:

  • Start by logging into your Duolingo account using the email address you registered with.
  • Once logged in, you need to navigate to the “My Tests” section.
  • Next, find your certified exam result and click on the “Share Score” option.
  • You will be prompted to select the type of institution you’re applying to (university, secondary school, or others).
  • Then, you need to type the name of the institution you’re applying to and choose it from the provided list.
  • If the institution requests an Application ID, ensure you add it.
  • Finally, click the “Send” button to submit your test scores to the selected organizations.

You can select up to 25 institutions at a time. If you select fewer than 25, you can add more later. If you need to send your results to more than 25 institutions, you can contact Duolingo support to ask for it, but approval is not guaranteed (Duolingo Help Center, October 2026).

Duolingo will ask you to confirm that you are officially applying to each institution. Sending your result is not enough to be considered for admission: you must also apply to the institution itself. If an institution does not appear in the search list, ask the institution directly whether it accepts the Duolingo English Test.
