Australia

Home Affairs sets the rule by English level and visa subclass. For competent and superior English, you show a test score achieved in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the subclass. The English tests approved for Australian visa purposes changed on 7 August 2025. If you took a test before that date, Home Affairs says your result may still be valid for up to 3 years, depending on the visa subclass (Home Affairs: competent English, superior English). Because the accepted tests and scores also changed, check your own subclass, the test date and the score table on the Home Affairs page before you apply. Do not assume that every visa accepts a 3-year-old IELTS result.

New Zealand

Immigration New Zealand states that for skilled residence visas your English test result must be no more than 2 years old when you apply. Requirements differ by visa category, and some visas do not ask for a test at all, so check the page for your visa type, including the accepted tests and the date used to count validity.

Universities

Universities in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Europe set their own IELTS rules. Two years is common, but it varies by university and course. When you check a university, confirm:

• The deadline: Must the result be valid when you apply, when you receive an offer, when you enrol, or when your course starts?
• The accepted test: Does the institution accept IELTS Academic, IELTS Online or IELTS One Skill Retake for your purpose?
• Programme rules: Does your faculty add its own language requirement?

Can You Extend an Expired IELTS Result?

Retaking IELTS or Taking One Skill Retake

How Organisations Verify a Result

Organisations do not have to rely on a paper copy or PDF. They can use the IELTS Results Service: an authorised user signs in (multi-factor authentication is required), then looks up the result using the Test Report Form number to check the identity and scores (IELTS: verifying results). Every TRF carries its own number, so you can give the receiving organisation the number as well as the document.

Can an Expired Result Still Be Verified?

Yes. IELTS says an organisation can verify a Test Report Form that is older than two years. IELTS also states that it cannot further investigate TRFs that are more than three years old.
