PTE Core for Express Entry: CLB 7 and CLB 9 CRS Points

Key Takeaways

  • What CLB 7 and CLB 9 are worth in Express Entry CRS points, and how your PTE Core score and SRC reach IRCC.

Express Entry does not look at your PTE Core overall score. IRCC converts each of your four skill scores into a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level, and that level decides your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. This guide covers the two levels most candidates aim for, CLB 7 and CLB 9, and what each is worth.

For the full 10 to 90 scale and every CLB level, see our PTE Core score chart and CLB table.

CLB 7 and CLB 9 at a glance

The table shows the lowest PTE Core score in each skill that reaches the level, and the CRS points IRCC gives for that level in each of the four abilities.

Level Listening Reading Speaking Writing CRS points per ability
CLB 7 60 60 68 69 16 with a spouse or partner, 17 without
CLB 9 82 78 84 88 29 with a spouse or partner, 31 without

Sources: Pearson PTE Core Score Guide (January 2026) with the IRCC language test equivalency tables, and the IRCC Comprehensive Ranking System criteria, checked on 26 October 2026.

How CLB turns into CRS points

CRS gives points for your first official language, one ability at a time: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. The points are not based on your overall score or on an average of the four skills.

  • CLB 7 in all four abilities: 16 points per ability with a spouse or common-law partner (64 in total), or 17 points per ability without one (68 in total).
  • CLB 9 in all four abilities: 29 points per ability with a spouse or common-law partner (116 in total), or 31 points per ability without one (124 in total).

Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in every ability therefore adds 52 core points with a spouse or partner and 56 without. IRCC also gives points for CLB levels between the two, so a single skill that falls short of your target costs you only that skill’s points.

What CLB 7 means for the Federal Skilled Worker Program

CLB 7 is the language floor for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. Every one of the four skills must reach CLB 7, and the program also needs 67 points or more out of 100 on its selection grid and at least one year of continuous skilled work. CLB 7 meets the language rule, but it does not by itself earn you an invitation to apply.

For the Federal Skilled Worker minimum, one weak skill is enough to miss the target. For CRS, each skill is scored separately.

Skill transferability points and CLB 9

CRS also has a skill transferability section worth up to 100 points. Language level combines with your education or your foreign work experience, and CLB 9 in all four abilities moves you into the higher tier of each combination.

  • Education and language: with CLB 7 or higher in all four abilities and at least one below CLB 9, you can earn 13 to 25 points, depending on your credentials. With CLB 9 in all four, the range is 25 to 50 points.
  • Foreign work experience and language: with CLB 7 or higher and at least one ability below CLB 9, you earn 13 points for 1 to 2 years of experience or 25 points for 3 or more years. With CLB 9 in all four, that becomes 25 or 50 points.

Each of these two combinations is capped at 50 points, and the whole section is capped at 100. CLB 9 raises the ceiling but does not award points on its own, so check your own education and work history against the official grid. IRCC can change the CRS grid, so confirm the figures on the IRCC site before you plan around them.

How your Score Report Code reaches IRCC

Pearson score reports include a Score Report Code (SRC) that you can use to share your PTE Core score with IRCC. You can also send your score directly from your myPTE account. Provide the SRC where IRCC asks for your language test details, and keep your own copy of the report for your records.

PTE Core results are valid for two years from the test date. For Express Entry, your results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and again when you submit your permanent residence application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IRCC average my PTE Core scores?

No. IRCC converts each skill score to a CLB level on its own. For a minimum requirement such as CLB 7 for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, every one of the four skills must reach that level. For CRS, points are awarded for each skill separately.

Is PTE Academic accepted for Express Entry?

Pearson lists PTE Core, not PTE Academic, for IRCC permanent residency applications. PTE Academic is the Pearson test for study abroad.

How many CRS points is CLB 9 worth?

For the four core language abilities, CLB 9 gives 116 points with a spouse or partner and 124 without. Skill transferability points can add more, depending on your education and work experience.
