Although the Personal Introduction task in PTE Core doesn’t count toward your score, it’s still worth your attention.
In this task, you’ll briefly introduce yourself, just a short talk about your background or interests.
It’s mainly used to familiarize yourself with the mic and get comfortable speaking.
Most importantly, here’s your golden chance to test your microphone and spot any technical issues before the real scoring begins.
That, in turn, sets a strong tone for the rest of your Speaking section.
So, no need to stress, but don’t skip it either!
To make the most of your 30 seconds, follow a simple formula:
Practice this structure out loud several times until you can say it fluently within 30 seconds.
You can use a timer to monitor your pacing and adjust if you rush or run out of time.
Before test day, set up your device and microphone in a quiet, echo-free space.
For the clearest sound, use a wired headset with a built-in microphone.
Check that your microphone is not too far away (which causes low volume) but not too close, so you’re neither whispering nor shouting.
Make a few test recordings while reading your script or speaking freely, and adjust your microphone settings until your voice sounds natural and clear.
The Personal Introduction is your warm-up round and your chance to get into the flow of speaking English.
So, don’t make it sound like you’re reading a script word-for-word!
Instead, write a short outline and speak naturally, like you’re talking to someone face-to-face.
Record yourself saying your introduction with different tones, then listen back to hear which version sounds the most confident and natural.
Choose one that feels comfortable and make that your go-to version.
Also, smile while you speak; it actually makes your tone sound friendlier and more confident, even in a recording!
