Word repetition between the question and a response is the most common trap in Part 2. If a response echoes a word you just heard, treat it as wrong until proved otherwise.

Reading order for a Part 7 set

1. Header: who wrote it, to whom, when, what type of document.
2. Question stems only — not the four options yet.
3. Passage once at normal speed.
4. Detail questions in printed order.
5. Purpose, inference and NOT questions last.
6. In double and triple sets, note which text each question points to before reading.

Option traps to reject on sight

The morning of

1. Bring valid photo ID matching your registration exactly.
2. Arrive early enough that pacing yourself is the only thing you have to think about.
3. Write your Part 7 start deadline on the answer sheet as soon as Reading opens.
4. Fill in every box, including the ones you never read. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
5. If you fall behind in Part 3 or 4, abandon the current set and read ahead to the next one rather than chasing lost audio.

FAQ

How long is the TOEIC Listening and Reading test?

About two hours of testing: roughly 45 minutes of Listening and a fixed 75 minutes of Reading, for 200 questions. Registration and administration add time at the venue.

Should I guess on the TOEIC?

Yes, on every question you cannot answer. There is no deduction for a wrong answer, so a blank and a wrong guess cost the same while the guess still has a chance of scoring.

Can I go back to Listening questions during the Reading section?

No. The Listening section is paced by the audio and closes when it ends. Only the Reading section is self-paced, and only within its own 75 minutes.

Which part should I practise most?

Part 7 if your Reading score is behind, because it is 54 of the 100 Reading questions. Parts 3 and 4 if your Listening score is behind, since together they carry 69 of the 100 Listening questions.

Can I write in the test booklet?

Policies vary by test centre and administration, so check the instructions you are given on the day rather than assuming. Plan a strategy that works without notes, and treat any allowance as a bonus.
